Trump says it would be ‘hard for me’ to fund New York City if Mamdani becomes mayor

President Donald Trump expressed reluctance to allocate federal funding to New York City if Zohran Mamdani, identified as a left-wing front-runner, wins the upcoming mayoral election. In a television interview, Trump stated, “It’s gonna be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York, because if you have a Communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there.”

The Trump administration has aimed to reduce federal grants and financial support for projects in areas where Democrats hold leadership positions. As the election approaches, opinion polls suggest Mamdani is leading over his primary opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Trump did not clarify how funding would be impacted should Mamdani secure victory. For context, New York City received approximately $7.4 billion in federal funding during the current fiscal year. In the same interview, Trump characterized a potential Mayor Mamdani as a figure who would perform worse than former Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Trump made comments endorsing Cuomo, noting that although he does not support him entirely, he prefers Cuomo over Mamdani, describing the latter as a “Communist.” Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, refuted claims of being a communist, humorously comparing himself to a Scandinavian politician.

Mamdani won the Democratic primary with Cuomo finishing second. He has criticized Cuomo as a “puppet” of Trump and emphasized that the response to Trump’s presidency should not mirror it. Instead, he advocates for a vision that uplifts the dignity of all New Yorkers.

Cuomo attempted to counter this narrative by framing himself as the more experienced candidate capable of interacting with the Trump administration effectively. He highlighted his tenure as governor during the COVID-19 pandemic, despite facing criticism regarding nursing home death reporting.

Additionally, Trump has previously intervened in Democratic-led cities, deploying National Guard troops as part of a crime reduction strategy while targeting funding for jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration efforts.
