In a significant development in Syria, members of the security and military forces have been arrested as part of an investigation into sectarian violence in the southern province of Suwayda earlier this year. This violence, which occurred in July, reportedly resulted in hundreds of fatalities. Judge Hatem Naasan, leading the investigation, stated that the detentions were based on evidence of violations captured in videos shared on social media.
Naasan indicated that the authorities had identified individuals through these videos, which depicted armed men committing acts of violence against Druze civilians. The arrested security personnel were detained by the Interior Ministry, whereas military personnel were taken into custody by the Defence Ministry. Naasan did not specify the number of arrests made or provide an updated death toll, noting that these details would be included in a final report anticipated by the end of the year.
Furthermore, Naasan acknowledged the presence of foreign fighters who had entered Suwayda, although he clarified that none were affiliated with Syrian security or military forces. The violence in Suwayda erupted following the abduction of a Druze truck driver, leading to the involvement of Bedouin tribal fighters and subsequent military action. There were allegations that government forces favored the Bedouins during the conflict.
In the aftermath of the violence, a ceasefire was established after a week of intense clashes. Israel also intervened, conducting air strikes against Syrian government forces, claiming to protect the Druze community. Meanwhile, there are increasing calls within Suwayda for some form of autonomy, and significant local divisions have emerged regarding the future governance of the region.
In this context, President Ahmed al-Sharaa is attempting to integrate Syria into the international community following years of conflict. Recent developments include an address to the United Nations General Assembly and engagement with U.S. President Donald Trump, amid easing sanctions from both the U.S. and European Union. Despite these advances, the challenges to national unity and stability remain significant.
