Zimbabwe lawmaker dies after his car hits an elephant

Desire Moyo, a Zimbabwean opposition lawmaker, died in an accident after the vehicle he was in collided with an elephant on the Bulawayo-Gweru highway. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning while Moyo was traveling with four other members of Parliament, according to reports from local media, including state-owned broadcaster ZBC. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other MPs sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Moyo, a member of the opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), was approaching his 46th birthday at the time of his death. He represented the Nkulumane Constituency in Bulawayo and was known for his contributions to the arts as a poet and educator. Following the news of his passing, the Nkulumane Constituency expressed its “deep sorrow and profound shock” in a public statement.

Details regarding the crash were shared by fellow CCC member and MP Discent Bajila, who spoke to the injured lawmakers. According to Bajila, one of the passengers, Madalaboy Ndebele, recalled that the vehicle struck the elephant, which then turned and apparently caused significant damage to the vehicle, contributing to Moyo’s fatal injuries.

Colleagues and officials, including MP Caston Matewu and Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart, paid tribute to Moyo, describing him as a dedicated leader and a champion of the arts in the region. Moyo was recognized for his longstanding commitment to nurturing Zimbabwe’s creative sector, reinforcing his legacy within the community. The other lawmakers involved in the accident continue to receive medical treatment.
