YouTube’s AI ‘likeness detection’ tool is searching for deepfakes of popular creators

YouTube is introducing a new feature for creators within its Partner Program that enables AI detection of unauthorized uploads using their likeness. This feature allows creators, after verifying their identity, to review videos flagged in the Content Detection tab of YouTube Studio. If a creator identifies a video as unauthorized and AI-generated, they can submit a request for removal.

The rollout began today, with the first group of eligible creators receiving notifications via email. More creators will gain access over the upcoming months. YouTube has cautioned early users that the technology may flag videos depicting their actual appearance, not just manipulated or synthetic versions. This feature operates similarly to YouTube’s existing Content ID system, which is used to identify copyrighted material.

YouTube initially announced this feature last year and began testing it in December through a pilot program in collaboration with the Creative Artists Agency (CAA). According to YouTube, this partnership allows notable figures to utilize early-stage technology aimed at managing AI-generated content that features their likeness effectively.

YouTube and its parent company Google are part of a growing trend among tech companies developing tools for AI video generation and editing. The likeness detection tool is one of several features in the pipeline to address challenges posed by AI-generated content. Additionally, last March, YouTube instituted a requirement for creators to label content that has been generated or altered through AI and implemented policies regarding AI-generated music that mimics artists’ unique voices.

As these tools and policies evolve, what implications might they hold for both creators and the broader landscape of content sharing online?
