Over two years after launching its first modular and repairable wireless headphones, Fairphone has introduced an upgraded version called the Fairbuds XL. While maintaining a similar appearance to the originals, the new design features enhanced comfort with breathable mesh fabrics and improved sound quality through updated drivers. Notably, the modular design allows first-generation Fairbuds XL owners to upgrade certain components to enhance sound without needing to purchase an entirely new pair.
The updated Fairbuds XL showcase a sleeker design, including the use of breathable materials on the headband and ear cushions. Fairphone emphasizes that these features contribute to enhanced comfort during extended listening periods. The headphones retain traits such as IP54 dust and water resistance, a USB-C charging port, a dedicated active noise cancellation (ANC) button, and a joystick for playback and volume control. Available in two deeper color options, forest green and horizon black, the Fairbuds XL are intended to present a more premium look.
Fairphone claims that the new model offers better sound due to 40 mm dynamic drivers and refined audio tuning. However, Bluetooth connectivity continues to support only AAC, SBC, and aptX HD codecs. The headphones feature a replaceable battery and eight modular components to extend their lifespan, with battery life capped at 30 hours, which decreases when ANC is activated.
Following a lengthy wait for the original Fairbuds XL to enter the U.S. market, the new model will be available globally starting at the same price as its predecessor. U.S. sales are expected to begin through Amazon later this month at a price of $229.
In addition, Fairphone plans to sell the new driver units separately for €61.95, with discounted bundles that include ear cushions and speaker covers. These spare parts will not be available in the U.S. until later in 2026, shortly after the original model’s recent U.S. launch.
