Under the current Labour government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, there has been a notable increase in public scrutiny of immigration due to the growing popularity of parties like Reform UK, which focused its campaign on immigration issues. This situation raises questions about why a center-left government is looking to adopt stricter measures associated with right-wing policies.
Denmark’s immigration laws have evolved over the past two decades to restrict asylum seekers, aiming for a “zero asylum seekers” policy. The country has made family reunification criteria stricter, especially for residents of “parallel societies,” a move criticized by rights organizations for potential ethnic profiling. Furthermore, individuals seeking permanent residency must meet stringent conditions, including longer wait times and employment requirements.
In contrast, the UK currently allows asylum claims based on safety in home countries and typically grants a five-year leave to remain. However, the Labour government’s proposed changes would extend the mandatory waiting period for permanent settlement to ten years and tighten language requirements. These developments come amid rising net migration figures, which have reached record levels.
Inside the Labour Party, there is internal dissent regarding the proposed immigration reforms. Some members argue that adopting aspects of Denmark’s approach could alienate progressive voters and that it reflects a dangerous shift toward far-right policies.
