Demolition work has commenced on the East Wing of the White House as preparations begin for a new ballroom, proposed by President Donald Trump. On Monday, construction crews began removing parts of a covered entryway and windows as part of the modernization efforts announced by Trump.
The new ballroom, which is projected to cost $250 million, will be situated close to the existing structure without altering it. Trump emphasized in a July statement that the new addition would respect the historical integrity of the White House. He expressed his affection for the building, referring to it as his “favorite place.”
In his announcement shared via social media, Trump noted that “ground has been broken” for a “much-needed” ballroom. He stated that for over 150 years, past presidents have envisioned having a ballroom to host significant events such as grand parties and state visits. Funding for the project is expected to come from private sources, described by Trump as “many generous Patriots.”
The East Wing, which has been part of the White House for over a century, was originally constructed in 1902 and last underwent modifications in 1942. Observers noted the presence of heavy construction equipment near the East Wing, with some machinery displaying U.S. flags.
Trump clarified that the East Wing is “completely separate” from the main structure of the White House, despite being attached. Visual evidence from the site showed significant demolition activity, including visible debris and exposed metal cables. This recent construction work has drawn attention, with a few onlookers stopping to inquire about the developments. One bystander expressed her discontent with the changes, though she did not provide her name.
