Where peace stands after frantic diplomacy

Recent diplomatic discussions surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have evolved amid mixed responses from various parties involved. Former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated optimism about the potential for an agreement, stating, “We’re getting very close to a deal.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also expressed hope after discussions in Geneva, citing “many prospects that can make the path to peace real,” while acknowledging significant work remains.

Conversely, Russia’s reaction has been reserved. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov acknowledged some positive aspects of a recent draft but noted that many elements require further expert discussions. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesperson for President Vladimir Putin, described it as “premature” to conclude that a deal is imminent. The substantial differences on critical topics such as territorial disputes, NATO membership, reconstruction costs for Ukraine, and accountability for war crimes still hinder progress.

A leaked draft of a 28-point U.S. plan aimed at ending the conflict has sparked contention. This plan included controversial demands for Ukraine to relinquish territory, leading European diplomats to swiftly draft a counter-proposal that proposes negotiations on territorial adjustments without the blunt concessions of the U.S. version.

As diplomatic efforts continue, U.S.-Ukrainian discussions emphasized the need for a “sustainable and just peace.” However, both sides remain cautious regarding security guarantees that Ukraine could expect in the event of an agreement. The evolving security framework, once tied to NATO principles, is still being worked out among European and U.S. leaders.

While some experts express cautious optimism regarding the pace of negotiations, ongoing uncertainties about security assurances and territorial integrity pose significant challenges. As events unfold, the complexity of the situation suggests that reaching a resolution may still require considerable time and effort.
