What is the EU’s new border system EES

The European Union is set to implement its new digital border system, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), beginning on October 12, 2023. This system aims to enhance security while potentially streamlining travel for non-EU citizens entering and exiting the Schengen Area, which comprises 29 European countries. Popular destinations for UK travelers included in the Schengen Area are France, Spain, and Italy.

The EES rollout will be gradual, starting with coach passengers at Dover and followed by other tourist traffic on November 1. At Eurostar terminals, only a select group of business travelers will engage with the new system initially, with broader passenger inclusion phased in over the subsequent months. The complete activation of EES across all Schengen border points is expected by April 10, 2026.

Under the new system, first-time travelers from non-EU countries, including the UK, will need to provide biometric information while having their passports scanned. This may involve registering at kiosks, which have been installed at major travel hubs, such as London St Pancras. Passengers will complete the process prior to ticket presentation, contributing to potential delays in processing times.

Concerns have emerged regarding possible long queues, especially at busy locations like Dover. Travel officials believe that a staggered introduction will help mitigate disruptions. The port of Dover has even planned to adapt its facilities to handle the new system effectively. The Eurotunnel and Eurostar have implemented measures to ensure a smooth transition.

In a related development, the EU will also introduce the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) in late 2026. This will require non-EU citizens, including UK travelers, to apply online for travel authorization before their trips.
