On Wednesday, a contentious debate in the Mexican Senate escalated into a physical altercation involving prominent politicians. Senator Alejandro Moreno, representing the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), confronted Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña, seeking permission to address the chamber.
The situation intensified when Moreno engaged in a physical struggle with Fernández Noroña, resulting in punches being thrown and an injury sustained by a photographer who intervened. Tensions had been palpable throughout the discussion, which focused on the involvement of foreign military forces on Mexican territory.
The confrontation occurred after the national anthem was played and seems to have stemmed from Moreno’s frustration over his inability to participate in the debate. Following the incident, the Senate President announced plans to convene an emergency session aimed at expelling Moreno along with three additional opposition lawmakers who were also involved in the scuffle.
This incident raises questions about decorum and conduct within legislative proceedings in Mexico.
