NORFOLK, Va. — A video circulating on social media, which claimed that a Navy sailor was detained during a traffic stop by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, has been identified as fabricated. Virginia State Senator Angela Williams Graves announced this finding on Thursday.
The Norfolk Police Department, which began investigating the matter on Wednesday, confirmed that the incident described in the video did not happen. Graves stated that both the Norfolk Police and the Navy concluded there was no traffic stop involving the sailor.
The sailor’s video alleged that he was pulled over for a window tint violation and subsequently detained by an ICE agent for an hour, despite presenting military identification. The police confirmed that they do not conduct traffic stops with ICE agents.
The claims received significant attention after being shared on social media by Virginia Delegate Jackie Hope Glass. Graves emphasized the importance of truthful reporting on law enforcement encounters, especially in a climate of heightened concern regarding immigration enforcement.
