Venezuelan opposition leader wins Nobel Peace Prize

María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts in promoting democratic rights in Venezuela. The Nobel Committee recognized her as an exemplary figure of civilian courage in Latin America and commended her commitment to achieving a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

Machado has been a steadfast opponent of President Nicolás Maduro, whose 12-year presidency has been characterized by widespread allegations of illegitimacy. Over the years, she has faced significant challenges, including being barred from running in last year’s presidential elections, which were widely condemned as neither free nor fair. Despite these obstacles, Machado maintained her role as a unifying leader within an otherwise fragmented opposition.

The Nobel announcement highlighted concerns about the global retreat of democracy, referencing trends where governing authorities suppress free media and imprison critics. The committee’s chairman, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, stated that Machado’s decision to remain in Venezuela amid serious threats to her safety serves as an inspiration to many. The Nobel Committee indicated hopes that she could attend the award ceremony, though the security risks pose uncertainties.

In reaction to the award, Machado expressed surprise and attributed her recognition to the collective struggle of the Venezuelan people. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, who was also nominated, did not receive the award. The White House criticized the Nobel Committee, alleging a political bias in their decision-making process.

The Nobel Prize aims to honor individuals or organizations contributing significantly to humanity, and this year had 338 candidates nominated. However, the specifics of all nominees remain confidential for 50 years according to tradition.
