In November 2022, DePree reported that he was unexpectedly locked out of Hopwood Hall by the council, which claimed he had not fulfilled his obligations under their agreement. DePree characterized this move as shocking and expressed concern for the involvement of local volunteers who had contributed significantly to the garden restoration over the years. He emphasized his commitment to the project, citing personal investments of time and money.
After nearly a year of attempting to resolve the situation with the council, DePree announced plans to take legal action to compel Rochdale Council to adhere to the original agreement from 2017. DePree’s lawyer noted that newly obtained evidence suggests the council has altered its position regarding the agreement since its inception.
Rochdale Council has stated that it cannot comment on ongoing legal matters, but it previously explained that DePree had not submitted a viable business plan to ensure the hall’s long-term sustainability. A council spokesperson highlighted the substantial investment made in the building and indicated that they had engaged independent consultants who deemed DePree’s proposals financially unfeasible. The council expressed its commitment to exploring alternative options for the hall’s preservation while underlining its importance to the local heritage.
