UK and allies ready to back Ukraine before and after peace deal

The UK and its allies are preparing to support Ukraine in efforts to end the ongoing conflict and establish a peace deal, as stated by UK Defence Secretary John Healey. In an interview in Kyiv, Healey emphasized that Ukraine’s allies would be prepared to enhance security in the air, at sea, and on land after a peace agreement is reached.

This statement comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a recent communication from China, asserted that Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine would persist. Healey characterized Putin’s remarks as bluster, claiming that Russia is facing significant pressure. Notably, he acknowledged the role of US President Donald Trump in facilitating dialogue with Putin.

Trump has expressed disappointment in Putin for not engaging with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding peace discussions. Putin indicated a cautious optimism about finding a resolution, mentioning a “light at the end of the tunnel.” However, he also reaffirmed Russia’s demands, which include addressing issues he claims are discriminatory towards ethnic Russians in Ukraine.

In the context of international support, Healey revealed that the UK is committed to providing military aid to Ukraine, including the transfer of £1 billion of seized Russian assets. French President Emmanuel Macron plans to convene a meeting atthe Élysée Palace aimed at offering security guarantees for Ukraine, pending US confirmation of its involvement.

As global leaders strategize for a potential peace scenario, the situation on the ground remains tense. Russia has intensified its aerial attacks, launching over 500 drones and 24 cruise missiles at Ukraine, causing significant civilian casualties and destruction. The impacts of these strikes are evident, raising questions about the effectiveness of ongoing discussions for peace amid escalating violence.
