These soft, plush balls, which resemble fluffy tennis balls, come in various designs ranging from animals to characters like Spider-Man and Paddington Bear. There are 80 different versions available for collectors. Victoria Kay, the head of buying and merchandising at Hamleys, noted that these toys provide simple enjoyment without the need for technology or complex instructions.
At this time of year, Hamleys compiles a list of toys anticipated to be popular for the holiday season. This includes traditional soft toys, such as teddy bears and Peppa Pig’s sister, Evie Pig. Buyers at Hamleys have observed a trend toward simpler toys and collecting for both children and adults. In addition to the Ty Bouncers, the store is offering food-themed plush toys, including a £12 cuddly slice of pizza, reflecting a broader trend in tactile toys.
While many selections on the list are low-tech, some high-tech items are also included, such as a robotic Woody from Toy Story priced at £80, a remote-controlled drifting car, and Soccer Dash, an AI-powered football game that features a smart ball.
Recent data indicates UK toy sales have increased by 8% this year, partly due to the success of films such as Minecraft and Lilo & Stitch, alongside a resurgence of interest in nostalgic toys. Among the listed items is a £40 Star Wars Power Crystal Lightsaber, emphasizing the appeal of both traditional and modern toys.
The evolving toy market is also witnessing a rise in consumers aged 12 and over, often referred to as “kidults,” who are interested in collectibles and premium products, including manga and anime-inspired items.
