Donald Trump is reported to have paused $400 million in weapons aid to Taiwan, raising concerns about the potential use of U.S. support for Taiwan as a bargaining chip in negotiations with China. This reported freeze on military provisions, which includes orders for lethal munitions and autonomous drones, could still be reversed, according to the Washington Post.
The timing of the pause coincides with ongoing U.S. efforts to negotiate a trade deal with China, shortly before a phone call between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Trump described the call as “productive,” highlighting discussions on trade, fentanyl, and the social media platform TikTok. They also agreed to meet in Korea in October, with plans for Trump to visit China in the following year. Notably, the readouts of the call did not mention Taiwan, which is a significant issue in U.S.-China relations.
Taiwan’s government and citizens oppose the prospect of Chinese rule, and this standoff has prompted increased military preparations from both sides. Recent comments from Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, emphasized the importance of building defense capabilities to maintain peace.
During Trump’s first term, U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan exceeded $10 billion. However, there has been a shift in approach during his second term, as he has questioned the value of U.S. support and suggested that Taiwan should contribute to its own defense funding. Taiwan is expected to increase its defense spending to 5% of its GDP by 2030.
The pause in aid emerged as a surprise at a defense expo in Taipei. Taiwanese officials did not confirm nor deny the report, emphasizing that the U.S. has consistently supported Taiwan’s defense capabilities. Analysts speculate that the pause might be a strategic move by Trump, potentially allowing China to exploit what could become an ongoing reduction in U.S. support for Taiwan.
