US President Donald Trump announced that he will direct an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, a financier facing allegations of sexual abuse, and his connections to major banks and prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton. Trump stated on social media that he plans to request Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI to examine Epstein’s relationships with Clinton and others, seeking clarity on their interactions.
The renewed scrutiny comes after US lawmakers released over 20,000 pages of documents from Epstein’s estate earlier this week, which included references to Trump. Clinton has denied any involvement or knowledge of Epstein’s criminal activities.
In his statement, Trump also indicated that the Department of Justice (DoJ) should investigate banks such as JP Morgan Chase, along with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman. He characterized Epstein as a figure tied to the Democratic Party, asserting, “Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrats’ problem, not the Republicans’ problem!” He further expressed a desire for the focus to remain off him, emphasizing his roles and responsibilities as President.
JPMorgan Chase responded by expressing regret over any past association with Epstein, asserting that their firm “did not help him commit his heinous acts.”
Trump’s call for an investigation arises just ahead of a scheduled vote in the House of Representatives, which will address a proposal to compel the justice department to release all related files concerning Epstein’s case. This development follows Democrat Adelita Grijalva’s swearing-in and her signing of a discharge petition seeking the files, which completed the necessary threshold for a floor vote.
