Three killed and dozens injured in train derailment

A train derailment in Egypt has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, with 103 others reported injured, according to the country’s health ministry. The incident occurred as the train was traveling from Marsa Matruh, a city on the northern coast, to Cairo. Around 15:30 local time on Saturday, seven carriages of the train came off the tracks, with two of those carriages overturning.

Health Minister Dr. Khaled Abdul Ghaffar expressed condolences to the victims’ families and conveyed hopes for a swift recovery for the injured. In response to the crash, the Egyptian National Railways Authority (ENRA) and the transport ministry have initiated an investigation to determine the cause, which remains unknown at this time. The derailment took place on a section of track between the Fouka and Jalal stations, situated just east of Marsa Matruh.

ENRA issued a statement indicating that any individuals found responsible for the incident would face consequences. Technical teams have been deployed to assist in clearing the wreckage and quickly restoring service.

Dr. Abdul Ghaffar visited the crash site to oversee the emergency response and later went to the local hospitals to check on the injured individuals. All injured were transported to two hospitals by ambulance, and the bodies of the deceased have been handed over to public prosecutors for further procedures.

Rail accidents have been a recurring issue in Egypt, often attributed to inadequate maintenance and a lack of investment in the railway infrastructure. Previous significant incidents include a tragic accident in 2002, which resulted in over 370 fatalities when a fire broke out on a train near Cairo.
