Meta has introduced group chat functionality to its platform, Threads, enabling users to engage in conversations with multiple friends simultaneously rather than relying on separate direct messages. Users can create a group chat by initiating a new message and adding up to 50 followers from their Threads account. The option to customize group chat names is also available, allowing users to organize conversations by topic or participants, similar to features in Facebook Messenger.
Currently, the rollout of group chat support is occurring globally; however, it excludes users in the UK and Australia. Meta spokesperson Alec Booker stated that efforts are underway to extend messaging capabilities to these regions as soon as possible. Planned future updates for Threads include enhancements to inbox management tools and the ability to invite participants to group chats by sharing a link, rather than adding them individually.
This update coincides with Threads’ expansion of messaging features to the European Union, including support for both individual direct messages and group chats, expected to take place over the next few days.
