Thousands of Palestinians are reportedly fleeing Gaza City following Israel’s announcement of a significant ground offensive aimed at occupying the city. The military action follows extensive bombing, with Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry claiming that al-Ranitisi children’s hospital was hit in three separate attacks, necessitating the evacuation of half its patients and families. The Israeli military has stated it is reviewing these claims and has conducted strikes on over 150 “terror targets” in Gaza City recently.
Israel’s stated objective is to eliminate up to 3,000 Hamas fighters, who are described as operating from what Israel considers the group’s “last stronghold,” while also working to secure its hostages. This military operation has faced global criticism; over 20 aid agency leaders have urged international leaders to intervene, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Many Palestinians are moving southward from Gaza City, using various forms of transportation, including donkey carts and rickshaws. Until recently, they were restricted to a single coastal road designated as a “humanitarian area” in al-Mawasi. The Israel Defense Forces announced a second route via Salah al-Din road, valid for 48 hours. Some fleeing residents face rising costs, with transportation and basic necessities becoming increasingly expensive. Reports indicate that around 350,000 people have fled Gaza City, although estimates suggest that at least 650,000 remain behind.
Additionally, the IDF has utilized modified military vehicles in its operations to target Hamas positions. Families of remaining hostages are expressing concern, arguing that the ongoing offensive could jeopardize their loved ones. The situation has drawn further scrutiny, with some international officials denouncing the military actions. Concurrently, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry asserted that Israel committed grave violations against Palestinians in Gaza, a claim that Israel’s foreign ministry has refuted as false. Since the initiation of hostilities following an October 7 attack by Hamas, substantial casualties on both sides have been reported, including civilian deaths and hostages taken. The UN has warned that the escalating conflict could lead to an even greater humanitarian disaster.
