At least 13 individuals were reported killed following a shelling incident at the Saudi hospital in el-Fasher, Sudan, a city that has been under siege for over 17 months. This attack on Tuesday night also resulted in injuries to 16 others, including a doctor and a nurse, as confirmed by a source at the hospital.
The hospital reportedly sustained significant damage, with images depicting shattered windows, cracks from shrapnel, and debris scattered throughout various wards. A group of Sudanese medics referred to this assault as a war crime. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have maintained an ongoing siege of el-Fasher, which has left hundreds of thousands of residents facing severe food shortages.
Currently, the RSF is engaged in a conflict with the Sudanese army for control of el-Fasher, which is recognized as the last military stronghold in the Darfur region. This incident marks the second attack on the Saudi hospital this year, with a previous incident in January resulting in the deaths of three children and injuries to three others.
The recent escalation of the RSF’s operations in el-Fasher has led experts to speculate that the city may soon fall unless the army receives immediate reinforcements. The ongoing civil war between the two factions has persisted for more than two years, resulting in a severe humanitarian crisis that includes tens of thousands of fatalities.
The continuous violence in el-Fasher has led to the closure of most health facilities, and humanitarian aid convoys have been obstructed from reaching civilians in need. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed concerns about the escalating situation, stating that urgent measures are necessary to alleviate the siege and ensure the safety of civilians in the area.
