The Lisbon funicular crash has resulted in the identification of David Young, 82, as the third British victim. Young, from Holyhead on Anglesey, was part of a total of 16 fatalities when the Glória funicular derailed and collided with a building in Lisbon on a recent Wednesday. His family noted that he was a “lifelong transport enthusiast,” suggesting that he found fulfillment in his hobby.
In addition to Young, Cheshire Police confirmed that Kayleigh Smith, 36, and her partner Will Nelson, 44, were also among the deceased. Young had a long history in customs enforcement and moved to Holyhead in 1980 after growing up in Auchterarder, Perthshire. His family reported that he enjoyed visiting heritage railways and tramways during his retirement.
Local MP Llinos Medi expressed condolences to Young’s family and all those affected by the tragedy. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has also shared his sorrow over the incident through a spokesperson, emphasizing solidarity with Portugal during this challenging time.
The Glória funicular, which has been operating for 140 years, is a notable tourist attraction known for its yellow tram-like vehicles. Reports indicate that a cable on the railway snapped, signaling a possible cause for the derailment, although other components of the mechanism reportedly worked correctly. Despite attempts by the brakeman to engage emergency brakes, the train could not be stopped.
The specific reasons behind the accident remain under investigation, with nationals from multiple countries, including Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland, Canada, France, Britain, Ukraine, and the United States among the casualties.
