The UK announces mandatory digital ID plans

The United Kingdom is set to launch a national digital ID scheme aimed at addressing issues related to illegal migrant workers. According to a government press release, the digital ID will be accessible via the GOV.UK wallet app, which is currently under development. By July 2029, possessing this digital ID will be mandatory for all adults working in the UK.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the potential of the digital ID, suggesting it could enhance border security and simplify identity verification for citizens needing access to essential services. However, the digital ID scheme is still in the planning stages and will require parliamentary approval before implementation. The government also plans to initiate a public consultation later this year to gather input on the digital ID service.

The proposal has raised concerns among privacy advocates, with organizations like Big Brother Watch arguing that it could fundamentally alter the relationship between citizens and the state. A petition opposing the digital ID cards has garnered over 830,000 signatures, focusing on fears related to mass surveillance and control.

Initial discussions about a digital ID scheme began in January, with the GOV.UK wallet originally intended to allow citizens to digitize documents like driver’s licenses. Currently, the app is described as optional, according to government sources.

This push for mandatory identification comes amid rising public concerns about migrant boat crossings and increasing pressure from right-wing populist parties advocating for tougher immigration policies. Notably, the UK does not have a system requiring citizens to carry a formal ID, such as a passport or driver’s license.

The European Union also plans to introduce a similar Digital Identity Wallet in the coming year, designed to let citizens and businesses verify their identities when accessing digital services.
