The Skipton library where you can borrow drills and a telescope

The Library of Things, which opened in Skipton, North Yorkshire, provides residents access to a variety of everyday items for borrowing, alongside traditional library offerings like books and films. This initiative aims to promote sustainability by encouraging people to reduce their consumption of rarely used goods.

Among the library’s first users is Susan Mullett, who took up DIY projects after losing her job. Mullett began borrowing tools such as wallpaper strippers and drills to manage her expenditures. She noted that the library has become her primary resource for borrowing items needed for events or projects.

The library operates under a subscription model, where members pay an annual fee of £10, with additional charges for premium items. Chair of the charity Share Skipton, Angela Monaghan, mentioned that popular items include garden tools and seasonal equipment, indicating a possible cyclical demand related to the time of year.

Since its inception in July 2024, the Library of Things has attracted around 500 members and recorded over 1,500 loans. Members can borrow items for one week, and many offerings are available at low costs, contributing to the library’s accessibility.

Daniel Brown, a new homeowner, expressed satisfaction in borrowing items like a wallpaper stripper and rotavator, emphasizing financial savings using the service rather than outright purchases. The library not only supports practical needs, but it also offers entertainment options like musical instruments and games to engage the community.

With over 600 items available, the Library of Things highlights a growing trend towards sharing resources and reducing waste. This model raises questions about its potential impact on consumer behavior and community engagement in sustainability practices.
