The next Star Wars game is the spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic

A new game in the Star Wars franchise titled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic has been announced, directed by Casey Hudson, known for his work on Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic. This reveal took place during The Game Awards, accompanied by a short trailer featuring a spaceship landing on a rainy planet and a character in white robes activating a lightsaber.

The trailer indicates that Fate of the Old Republic will be a single-player narrative game and is described as a spiritual successor to the KOTOR series. The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games.

Casey Hudson’s involvement marks his return to the Star Wars franchise. He previously served as a veteran developer at BioWare, where he played a significant role in directing the Mass Effect series and the original Knights of the Old Republic. After departing from BioWare in 2020, he founded a new studio, Humanoid Origin, which unfortunately shut down in 2024 before it could release any titles. The new project in collaboration with Arcanaut Studios suggests Hudson has found a new opportunity in the gaming industry.

As this announcement unfolds, questions arise about the game’s features, release date, and how it will connect to the established Star Wars universe.
