The foldable iPhone might look like two iPhone Airs stuck together

Rumors about a foldable iPhone have been circulating, with expectations for its release possibly in late 2024. Mark Gurman, in his Power On newsletter, indicates that the design will resemble two iPhone Airs connected together. This configuration is expected to be relatively thin but may be thicker than competitors like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Galaxy Z Fold7, which measure 10.8mm and 8.9mm, respectively. The iPhone Air itself is 5.6mm thick, while industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the foldable may be around 4.5mm when unfolded. However, the anticipated price is expected to be significant, starting at approximately $2,000.

One notable aspect of the foldable iPhone’s design is its emphasis on durability. Although foldable devices have seen improvements, concerns about their robustness remain. The new iPhone fold is expected to be constructed from titanium, similar to the iPhone Air, a material that has demonstrated resilience in previous tests. Both JerryRigsEverything and iFixIt have highlighted the Air’s toughness in their evaluations.

Repairability is another factor being considered. The iPhone Air received a repairability score of seven from iFixIt, which could be considered a strength if the foldable iPhone manages a similar ranking. This would be especially significant as both the Pixel Fold and Galaxy Z Fold7 scored much lower at three, indicating they are not only more fragile but also more challenging to repair. The market awaits further details on the design and functionality of the foldable iPhone.
