In 2022, the emergence of image-generating AI models, such as Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and OpenAI’s DALL-E 2, sparked significant interest within the tech community. These models could create images based on simple text prompts, leading to imaginative outcomes like fantastical landscapes and unconventional designs. However, many artists viewed these advancements as a form of intellectual theft, arguing that they undermine and replace original artistic work.
In response to these concerns, Ben Zhao, a computer security researcher at the University of Chicago, and his colleagues developed tools named Glaze and Nightshade. These tools introduce subtle modifications to images that render them unreadable by machine-learning models, thereby protecting artists from unauthorized AI scraping of their work. Zhao considers these tools as strategic measures to rebalance power from large technology corporations to individual creators.
