Thailand’s parliament has elected Anutin Charnvirakul as the new prime minister, marking a significant political shift in a country that has seen three leaders in just two years. Anutin’s appointment follows the recent removal of Paetongtarn Shinawatra by the constitutional court due to ethical violations related to a border dispute with Cambodia. Anutin’s Bhumjaithai party, which distanced itself from the coalition led by Paetongtarn’s Pheu Thai party, secured sufficient parliamentary support to claim the premiership.
This change comes amidst a backdrop of political instability in Thailand, where multiple administrations have been deposed by court interventions and military coups. Anutin’s rise represents a notable setback for the Shinawatra political dynasty, which has been a dominant force in Thai politics since 2001, when Paetongtarn’s father, Thaksin, first took office. His family members, including sister Yingluck, have faced similar fates of removal from power.
Following Paetongtarn’s ouster, Thaksin reportedly left the country on a private jet for medical treatment in Dubai, complicating the political landscape. This situation further sidelines the Pheu Thai party, which had been a significant player in the May 2023 elections but now finds itself lacking a viable candidate for the premiership.
Anutin Charnvirakul, a veteran politician with ambitions for leadership, leads Bhumjaithai, which holds only 69 of the 500 parliamentary seats. His party, known for its pragmatic approach to politics, has historically allied with various factions, including military-backed groups and Pheu Thai. Recently, Anutin shifted alliances to partner with the progressive People’s Party.
The People’s Party, despite having the most seats, cannot form a government due to its leaders’ political bans, and it has imposed conditions on supporting Anutin, including calling for an election within four months and amending the military-drafted constitution. Anutin’s success will depend on navigating these challenges effectively within his limited timeframe.
