Tens of thousands of individuals participated in protests across major cities and towns in Australia, advocating for action to address the crisis facing Palestinians in Gaza. According to organizers from Palestine Action, over 40 demonstrations were held nationwide on a recent Sunday, with significant gatherings in cities such as Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne.
Participants at these protests demanded that Australian politicians take more substantial actions regarding the situation in Gaza, referencing the Genocide Convention’s obligations to prevent and punish genocide. Organizers estimated that over 300,000 people took part in the demonstrations, with many attendees carrying Palestinian flags and chanting phrases like “free, free Palestine.”
In specific locations such as Melbourne, protesters called for immediate sanctions against Israel and an end to the arms trade with the country. Organizers asserted that any recognition of Palestinian statehood must be accompanied by stricter measures against Israel. Similar sentiments were echoed in Perth, where activists criticized the Australian government for continuing to arm Israel while proclaiming support for human rights.
These protests coincided with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification’s declaration of famine in Gaza, where intensified Israeli military actions have led to significant displacement and dire humanitarian conditions. Reports indicate that approximately 500,000 people in Gaza are experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger, with associated health risks.
Global protests in support of Palestinians also transpired, with demonstrations occurring in countries including Malaysia, Kenya, Belgium, and Senegal. Participants worldwide voiced their concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for increased aid.
The ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict has resulted in a significant toll, with reports indicating that over 62,000 Palestinians have died since its escalation in October 2023, including many in chaotic efforts to obtain food. Additionally, prior allegations of war crimes related to starvation have been directed at Israeli officials by the International Criminal Court.
