A fire at a nursing home in Tuzla, northeastern Bosnia-Herzegovina, resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and injuries to 20 others, according to local police. The blaze began on Tuesday night on the seventh floor of the facility shortly after 20:45 local time (19:45 GMT).
First responders, including firefighters and police officers, were among those injured and required medical treatment, with approximately 20 individuals transported to a local medical center, as reported by a police spokesperson. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, prompting the local government to announce that a comprehensive investigation will be initiated once the situation has stabilized.
The chairman of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s tripartite presidency, Željko Komšić, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the injured, as reported by national broadcaster BHRT. Ruza Kajic, a resident on the third floor, described the moment she was awakened by a “cracking sound” and saw burning debris falling from above. She noted that some residents on the higher floors were unable to evacuate due to mobility issues.
Footage from the scene demonstrated flames emerging from the windows of the upper floor of the nursing home. Additionally, a spokesperson for the Tuzla University clinical center reported that several patients were being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, with three in intensive care.
As the investigation unfolds, details regarding the fire’s origins and safety protocols within the facility are expected to be examined.
