Nagpur: Pediatric specialists in Nagpur have observed a significant increase in viral respiratory infections among children, with some cases leading to hospitalization. Although many illnesses are mild, health professionals emphasize the importance of addressing sustained high fever and difficulties in breathing. This surge has been linked to abrupt temperature changes and deteriorating air quality.

Dr. Vivek Charde, a pediatric intensivist, indicated that common symptoms include a fever lasting 2–3 days, along with cough and cold symptoms persisting up to a week. He noted that respiratory infections, particularly those caused by viruses like Influenza, Rhinovirus, and RSV, typically peak as winter approaches.

The symptoms often comprise cough, cold, wheezing, throat pain, fever, body aches, and fatigue, posing higher risks for children with pre-existing conditions like asthma or congenital heart disorders. Treatment generally remains symptomatic, focusing on antipyretics, hydration, and rest. Influenza vaccinations are recommended to bolster immunity, particularly before the monsoon season.

Furthermore, Dr. Shilpa Hazare, a pediatric pulmonologist, confirmed a rise in pneumonia cases and noted that infections are often transmitted within families, impacting adults as well. Experts across India have raised concerns regarding the prolonged poor air quality, indicating it may harm children’s lung development and increase susceptibility to both acute infections and long-term allergies.
