Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has initiated an investigation into the unrest that occurred during the recent election period. This follows allegations that her administration reacted violently to historic protests. President Samia was declared the winner of the presidential election with 98% of the votes, a result that the opposition has labeled a “mockery of democracy.” In the aftermath of the protests, at least 240 individuals have been charged with treason.
In addition to launching an inquiry, President Samia has instructed prosecutors to exercise leniency toward those arrested in connection with the unrest. During a recent address, she quoted a biblical passage, stating, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do,” emphasizing her intent to show compassion toward the accused individuals.
Her comments come after the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called for a thorough and transparent investigation into reported killings and human rights violations that took place during and after the elections on October 29. While opposition sources claim that hundreds may have died amid the unrest, authorities have not released an official death toll.
In her address to parliament, President Samia acknowledged that many arrested were young individuals who may not have fully grasped their involvement in the protests. As the nation’s leader, she urged lawmakers to collaborate and discuss the conduct of politics to prevent further turmoil. She also reaffirmed her commitment to initiating a new process for constitutional reform.
The protests, mainly organized by youth, mirrored global youth-driven movements against established leaders and unresponsive governments. Analysts note that while the unrest was unprecedented, it followed a tense political environment characterized by stalled reforms and the ongoing suppression of opposition leaders. Prior to the elections, major opposition figures faced significant barriers, further escalating tensions within the country.
