Taiwan airline apologises for asking dead flight attendant for paperwork

Eva Air, a Taiwanese airline, has issued an apology following a controversial incident involving the death of a 34-year-old flight attendant, referred to as Ms. Sun. She reportedly experienced illness on September 24 during a flight from Milan to Taoyuan City, Taiwan, and was hospitalized upon arrival. Ms. Sun passed away on October 8.

After her death, her family received a text from an Eva Air representative requesting documentation to confirm that she had applied for leave while in the hospital. In response, they provided a copy of her death certificate. This situation has prompted Taiwanese authorities and the airline to investigate whether Ms. Sun was denied medical assistance or was pressured to continue working while ill.

Colleagues of Ms. Sun anonymously claimed on social media that she had been encouraged to work despite her deteriorating health. The cause of her death has not been officially disclosed by the China Medical University Hospital in Taichung, where she died.

In a statement to the BBC, Eva Air expressed its condolences and stated that it had been in contact with her family during her hospitalization. The airline emphasized that the health and safety of its employees and passengers are top priorities and announced a comprehensive review of the circumstances surrounding Ms. Sun’s case.

Flight records indicated that Ms. Sun averaged 75 working hours per month over the preceding six months, which is considered within regulatory limits. Eva Air representatives acknowledged that the request for leave documentation sent posthumously was due to an internal error and personally apologized to her family. The airline’s president, Sun Chia-Ming, remarked on the profound loss, declaring that the investigation will be conducted responsibly. Additionally, Eva Air has faced fines for overtime violations in the past.
