Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently gained attention after passionately defending idlis on X (formerly Twitter). In response to a user who disparaged the dish, Tharoor composed a poetic tribute, describing a well-made idli as “a cloud, a whisper, a perfect dream of the perfectibility of human civilisation.” His remarks prompted widespread engagement online, including memes and retweets.
In response to the viral appreciation, the food delivery platform Swiggy delivered freshly prepared idlis to Tharoor’s residence. Employees were photographed with the MP and the idlis, marking a playful exchange between the food service and the politician known for his culinary interests.
Swiggy provided a message in Hindi, celebrating the opportunity to serve what they called the region’s finest idli, hoping it would bring joy to Tharoor.
Tharoor has a long history of expressing his fondness for idlis. He had previously spoken about enjoying idli breakfasts daily at a restaurant during a visit to Vienna.
