Authorities in Utah are investigating the shooting death of Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist, who was killed during an open-air event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Governor Spencer Cox reported that the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is currently not cooperating with the investigation and has not confessed to the crime. Robinson was taken into custody approximately 33 hours after the incident.
During multiple interviews, Governor Cox mentioned that while Robinson has not been forthcoming, individuals close to him have been cooperating with investigators. This includes Robinson’s roommate, who is also identified as his partner, and is said to have been helpful in the investigation despite lacking knowledge of the crime. The partner is noted to be transitioning from male to female, although the relevance of this detail to the investigation remains undetermined.
Cox addressed reports indicating that Robinson communicated on the Discord messaging platform after the shooting, allegedly joking about his involvement. He acknowledged that conversations occurred but asserted that others did not initially believe Robinson was telling the truth. Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice, and is being held without bail at Utah County Jail.
In the wake of Kirk’s death, Governor Cox has emphasized the need for unity to alleviate political tensions and expressed concerns about social media’s role in societal divisions. He characterized the shooting as a significant issue affecting the country and has called for accountability from social media platforms.
A memorial service for Kirk is scheduled for September 21 in Arizona, where he lived with his family. His organization, Turning Point USA, is known for advocating conservative principles on college campuses and played a role in supporting Republican candidates in recent elections.
