Sudan army torturing people to death, says rights group

A Sudanese human rights organization, Emergency Lawyers, has reported serious allegations against the country’s army and security forces, claiming they are involved in torture leading to fatalities and operating what are described as “execution chambers.” This group has documented numerous arrests in Khartoum, noting that some detainees have been found dead showing signs of having been tortured.

Since recapturing Khartoum from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in March, the army has been engaged in ongoing conflict with the RSF, resulting in significant loss of life over the past two years. The army has not publicly commented on these allegations.

Emergency Lawyers has stated that various atrocities have been committed by both the army and the RSF throughout the ongoing war, identifying an increase in violations. The organization claims that some individuals have been randomly detained and taken to large detention facilities. Allegations include inhumane conditions of detention, trials by security agencies lacking basic judicial standards, and instances where detainees were released in poor health or found dead.

The historical context of torture in Sudan dates back to the regime of former president Omar al-Bashir. In its March report, the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan noted that both the RSF and the army were implicated in a pattern of arbitrary detention and torture, alongside other forms of violence.

The current conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis, displacing approximately 12 million people and resulting in declarations of famine in some regions. Additionally, a cholera outbreak attributed to the war has reached alarming levels, with nearly 100,000 reported cases and 2,470 deaths in the past year, according to medical charity Doctors Without Borders.
