Strong iPhone 17 sales may push Apple ahead of Samsung this year

Counterpoint Research has projected that Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup may surpass Samsung in global smartphone shipments for the first time in 14 years. According to reports from CNBC and Bloomberg, Apple is estimated to ship 243 million units this year, compared to Samsung’s 235 million, giving Apple a 19.4 percent share of the smartphone market, just slightly ahead of Samsung.

The new iPhone 17 series reportedly achieved a 12 percent increase in sales during its first four weeks compared to the previous iPhone 16 lineup. This growth is attributed in part to a “lower-than-expected” impact from tariffs on consumer electronics.

Analysts have presented varying statistics regarding smartphone market leadership over recent years. However, Counterpoint’s analysis indicates that this year marks a significant milestone for Apple, as it would be the first time the company has overtaken Samsung in shipments. Despite concerns earlier in the year regarding the reception of the iPhone Air and uncertainties about Apple’s AI initiatives, the iPhone 17 series appears to have performed well overall.

Looking ahead, Apple plans to introduce a more affordable “17e” model in the spring and is also expected to launch its first foldable iPhone in the future. This potential expansion into new product categories may further influence Apple’s standing in the competitive smartphone market.
