A new initiative in County Tyrone aims to assist families affected by the cost-of-living crisis by providing free baby clothes. The program, located in Strabane, is funded by the Department for Communities and is designed for families with children aged up to five years old.
The HiVe Baby Hub will not only offer clothing but will also provide nappies and family toiletries at a low cost, which may be waived under certain circumstances. Karen Brown, a health visitor with the Western Trust, emphasizes that this effort is meant to support families in one of the UK’s most socio-economically deprived areas.
The project will operate from the Grass Roots Community Learning Hub on John Wesley Street and is a collaboration between the Western Trust, a local GP Federation, and community organizations. Families can access the service through referrals from health visitors, family nurses, and social workers, or can drop in directly.
In addition to clothing assistance, the initiative aims to reduce clothing waste through recycling. Brown notes that the project addresses real-time needs, given the current financial challenges many families face. It also includes other resources like a wellness café and a social supermarket, where members can purchase discounted groceries.
Ursula Doherty of the Strabane Community Project highlights the importance of the clothing exchange, particularly as families struggle to afford necessary hygiene products and clothes. She points out that financial strain is affecting a broad range of families, regardless of income status.
Local Deputy Mayor Niree McMorris remarked on the initiative’s significance, noting its environmental benefits and role in providing essential items for both children and mothers. The overall aim is to foster community resources and support for families amid the ongoing economic challenges.
