Starting next year, Roblox will require all users to go through an age estimation process if they want to chat with other players.

Roblox is set to implement an age estimation process that will be mandatory for users wishing to chat on the platform. This new requirement will affect all users starting early January 2025. Beginning the first week of December 2024, users in specific markets, including Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, will be required to complete this process to gain access to chat functionalities. Subsequent to this, the requirement will be rolled out to additional countries that support Roblox’s chat feature.

Once users complete the age estimation process, they will be categorized into age groups: Under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21 plus. According to Roblox Vice President Rajiv Bhatia, users will only be able to communicate with others within their assigned group and compatible age groups.

Roblox provided examples of how these age groups will operate concerning chat privileges. For instance, a user estimated to be 12 years old will be allowed to chat with individuals aged 15 or younger, while users aged 16 or older will not be able to chat with her. Conversely, a user estimated to be 18 years old can communicate with those aged 16 or older and has the option to add a younger sibling as a “Trusted Connection,” provided the sibling is aged 13 or older.

The age verification checks will utilize images and video, which are processed by the company Persona, who ensures that all data is deleted immediately after processing.
