Potential car buyers interested in transitioning from petrol to electric vehicles (EVs) often express concerns regarding higher initial costs, the availability of charging stations, and battery performance on long trips. However, a unique challenge has been highlighted by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), which claims that electric vehicles do not provide sufficient bomb protection required for armoured models.
According to JLR, the current armoured Range Rover Sentinels used by British officials will continue to operate on petrol due to the lack of engineering solutions that meet necessary safety and blast protection standards for battery electric vehicles. In a response to a governmental consultation regarding EV sales regulations, JLR argued that armoured vehicles should be exempt from the zero-emission vehicle mandate because of these safety concerns.
Armoured vehicles, which typically include additional safety features such as bulletproof glass and extensive armour plating, are already heavier. The added weight from EV batteries may further complicate the vehicle’s design and functionality, resulting in potential range issues and extended recharging times. Comparatively, BMW has developed the i7 Protection, an electric model that adequately incorporates protective features against explosives and drone attacks, suggesting that different manufacturers may have varying capabilities in this area.
JLR has stated that the UK government is its primary customer for armoured vehicles, which are assembled at JLR’s facility in Solihull and later enhanced by its specialist operations division. While the specific configurations of the prime minister’s fleet remain undisclosed, they reportedly include petrol-powered vehicles with powerful engines designed for rapid response in emergencies.
JLR has not provided detailed insights into the vulnerabilities of electric armoured vehicles. As electric vehicle technology continues to advance, how manufacturers will navigate these safety requirements remains an open question.
