Spotify is introducing managed accounts as part of its Premium Family plan, aimed at providing parents with more control over what their children listen to. These accounts are being launched in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, and the Netherlands following a pilot program that began last year. Managed accounts are designed for children under 13, allowing parents to curate a separate music experience within the primary Spotify app.
With these accounts, parents have the capability to filter out explicit content, block specific songs and artists, and hide videos that may accompany the audio tracks. Additionally, interactivity features are limited; for instance, children are not allowed to message other Spotify users. This approach differs from the dedicated Spotify Kids app, as managed accounts allow parental oversight within the main app environment.
Children using managed accounts can still add songs to their favorites, create playlists, and receive personalized recommendations based on their listening habits. Importantly, these activities do not affect the listening history or algorithm of the main account holder, helping to maintain the integrity of the family account’s discovery features.
Managed accounts are available exclusively through Spotify’s Premium Family plan, which costs $19.99 per month and includes six individual Premium accounts for users living at the same address. Family Plan subscribers can easily create a managed account by selecting the “Add a Member” option on their account page and choosing to add a listener under the age of 13.
