A new sports kit recycling initiative has been launched in Jersey to support families facing financial challenges, particularly in light of rising living costs. This project, created by Jersey Sport in collaboration with the social enterprise Acorn, aims to provide affordable sports gear for children, preventing them from missing out on sporting activities.
The initiative involves collecting and sorting donated sports equipment, which will then be sold at a reduced price in Acorn’s shop. Claudia Andrade, the inclusion and intervention officer at Jersey Sport, highlighted that “financial barriers” can restrict family participation in sports. By giving well-maintained kits a second life, the project seeks to facilitate greater access to sporting opportunities for families.
Andrade noted that many individuals likely possess sports items they no longer use or have outgrown, suggesting that households check for items that could be donated. The project is looking for a variety of equipment, including trainers, shorts, tracksuits, running gear, football boots, rugby boots, and even specialist items like tennis rackets.
Furthermore, this recycling effort not only promotes sustainability but also aims to create job opportunities for individuals with disabilities or health conditions through Acorn. As part of the initiative, donations can be made at several collection points throughout Jersey, including locations such as La Moye, Les Landes, and VCP schools, as well as Les Quennevais Sports Centre in St Brelade and Springfield Sports Centre in St Helier.
