South West Water is facing legal action related to a parasite that contaminated the water supply in parts of Devon last summer, resulting in illness among many residents. More than 140 individuals experienced symptoms associated with the parasite, including diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting, with four cases requiring hospitalization. Following the outbreak, around 16,000 households and businesses in the Brixham area were advised by the water company to boil drinking water before use.
The contamination was traced back to a water tank at Hillhead reservoir, leading to significant disruptions in the community. Local businesses faced cancellations from holidaymakers, and schools were forced to close temporarily. The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) has now issued a summons for prosecution against South West Water, citing potential violations of section 70(1) of the Water Industry Act 1991. This legislation criminalizes the supply of water deemed unfit for human consumption.
Marcus Rink, DWI’s chief inspector, noted the serious nature of the Brixham incident and emphasized the necessity for the court to evaluate the evidence concerning the public interest. Caroline Voaden, the Liberal Democrat MP for South Devon, expressed support for the DWI’s decision, highlighting the need for clarity regarding what South West Water knew about the safety of the water at the time.
Residents continue to express concerns about the safety of their drinking water, with some purchasing bottled water over a year after the outbreak. A representative for South West Water stated that the company has fully cooperated with the DWI and stressed their commitment to providing clean and safe drinking water to their customers across the region, which includes Cornwall, Devon, and the Isles of Scilly. The focus remains on addressing the current legal proceedings while ensuring public health and safety.
