The rail regulator in the UK has announced significant changes to train services between Manchester and London. As of mid-December, the 7 am Avanti West Coast service from Manchester Piccadilly to London Euston will be discontinued for passenger travel, although the same train will still operate without passengers. This decision is part of a broader timetable adjustment, which has raised concerns among passengers and industry stakeholders.
According to Avanti, the decision hinges on operational constraints, as the train and crew need to travel from Manchester to fulfill subsequent schedules at London Euston. The regulator states that this measure is necessary to maintain overall efficiency and reliability on the rail network. They explain that having a service run as empty coaching stock allows for greater flexibility in managing performance during disruptions.
This service, having started in 2008, has been pivotal for business travelers, providing an express connection that takes just under two hours. With its removal, the fastest available trains will now require approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, necessitating earlier departures for those aiming to arrive in London by 9 am.
While the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) defends the changes by citing evidence from Network Rail indicating adverse impacts on performance from adding trains in certain time slots, there is criticism from various quarters. Northern business leaders have expressed concerns that this change undermines access to essential services for business travelers and, consequently, revenue for the rail system. The ORR has noted that similar applications from open access companies seeking additional services have been declined.
