Sony and the South Korean video game developer NCSoft are collaborating on a new MMORPG titled Horizon Steel Frontiers. A recent video, which lasts over ten minutes and features a blend of cinematic scenes, pre-alpha gameplay footage, and developer interviews, suggests that the game will emphasize combating the large mechanical creatures characteristic of the Horizon franchise and enabling multiplayer interaction.
There has been no immediate response to media inquiries from either Sony or NCSoft’s public relations team. The promotional material for Steel Frontiers was initially discovered by The Verge on a game assets website intended for media and influencers, indicating a possible pre-announcement ahead of the G-Star 2025 event in Korea. This website also provided a Google Drive link containing the video. According to the information available, Steel Frontiers is set to be released on PC, iOS, and Android platforms.
The video showcases players engaging in battles with the mechanical beasts while exploring environments that include both verdant landscapes and industrial structures, reminiscent of previous Horizon titles. Jan-Bart van Beek, studio director at PlayStation’s Guerrilla Games, described Horizon Steel Frontiers as a mobile MMORPG designed to allow players to immerse themselves in the game from anywhere. Players will inhabit a region called the Deathlands, inspired by Arizona and New Mexico, where they will cooperate and compete with others in their quest to hunt machines and gather resources.
Executive producer Sung-Gu Lee highlighted the new gameplay mechanics that will be introduced, including the ability to collect weapons dropped by defeated machines for future encounters. The game will also feature character customization, allowing players to create their own avatars instead of using Aloy, the series’ established protagonist. Although a release date has not been confirmed, Lee indicated that the team aims to make the game accessible as soon as possible.
