Royal Mail is set to implement a rollout of 3,500 solar-powered postboxes throughout the UK, marking a significant change to the traditional red pillar boxes that have been part of the landscape for nearly 200 years. The new design incorporates solar panels on the top, which power a digitally-activated drawer intended for the deposit of smaller parcels, accommodating items as large as a shoebox. This initiative is described as the largest redesign in the company’s 175-year history.
The decision to introduce these new postboxes arises amidst increasing competition from other delivery services. Recently acquired by a Czech billionaire, Royal Mail has faced fines for failing to meet letter delivery targets. Following a successful pilot program in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, the rollout will begin in cities including Edinburgh, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Manchester.
The updated postboxes feature a rectangular solar panel positioned to optimize sunlight exposure, and include a barcode scanner to facilitate parcel drop-off. Customers will be able to manage their postings via the Royal Mail app, allowing tracking and proof of posting.
As e-commerce continues to rise, the demand for convenient parcel services has surged. Various venues around the UK, from newsagents to petrol stations, have started to incorporate parcel send-and-receive services, alongside an increase in self-service locker systems.
Royal Mail’s managing director stated that the trend of sending and returning parcels is poised to grow, especially with the expansion of second-hand marketplaces. The company hopes that the new postboxes will enhance its market position. However, with competitors like Evri and Yodel providing often cheaper delivery options, it remains uncertain whether these changes will suffice to maintain Royal Mail’s business viability. Additionally, the company has previously announced adjustments to its letter delivery schedule as a cost-cutting measure.
