Sky has announced plans to eliminate 600 jobs in the UK as part of a strategic shift towards enhancing its streaming services. This decision is part of a broader consultation affecting a total of 900 roles, with the expectation that 600 positions will ultimately be eliminated. Approximately two-thirds of the job losses are anticipated to occur at locations in Leeds, London, and Livingston, West Lothian.
Since the beginning of 2023, Sky has already reduced its workforce by nearly 3,000 positions, including engineers involved in satellite dish installation. Earlier this year, the company also disclosed the closure of three call centers, resulting in the loss of 2,000 jobs. Currently, Sky employs over 20,000 individuals in the UK.
The organization aims to redirect its focus towards improving its digital and television services instead of launching new platforms. According to Sky, these job cuts are not part of a cost-reduction strategy and are not based on individual performance assessments. Employees affected by the job cuts may have the opportunity to transition to other roles within the company.
A spokesperson highlighted that in recent years, Sky has introduced several new products, such as Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and a full-fiber broadband service. Looking forward, the company intends to shift its approach in order to provide customers with what it describes as the “next generation of experience,” emphasizing investments in digital-first services, high-quality content, and enhanced product performance, driven by global innovations.
