Shock as Kenyan lawyer killed in drive-by shooting in Nairobi

In a notable incident in Nairobi, Kenya, senior lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was killed in a drive-by shooting while driving home on Tuesday evening. Mbobu, a respected figure known for his work as a former head of a political parties’ dispute tribunal, was attacked by a gunman on a motorcycle, who reportedly fired multiple shots into his vehicle near the Lang’ata-Magadi road junction, close to a shopping center in the affluent Karen estate, approximately six miles from the city center.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigations are presently ongoing. The Law Society of Kenya has condemned the killing, deeming it a significant concern for the safety of legal professionals in the country. The society’s president, Faith Odhiambo, articulated worries regarding threats faced by lawyers and described the incident as having the characteristics of a “predetermined assassination.”

Following the shooting, the police have urged the public to remain calm and assist with any information that could aid in the investigation. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) expressed a commitment to delivering justice for Mbobu and his family.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi expressed deep sadness regarding the incident, emphasizing the need for thorough and swift investigations to identify those responsible for this crime. Mbobu was also recognized for his academic contributions as a law lecturer at the University of Nairobi and for mentoring future legal professionals. His previous roles included leadership positions in the Political Parties’ Dispute Tribunal and the Business Rent Premises Tribunal, placing him at the center of resolving significant political and commercial disputes.

This incident resonates within the context of a previous shooting in April, where MP Charles Ong’ondo Were was similarly killed in a suspected targeted attack, raising ongoing concerns about safety and security in the region.
