OpenAI has announced plans to introduce “erotica” content for ChatGPT users who can verify their age, with this functionality set to launch in December. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, shared this development through a post on X, emphasizing the company’s intention to support mature discussions aligned with their principle of treating adult users appropriately.
In addition to allowing erotica, OpenAI is working on a new version of ChatGPT designed to resemble the features that users appreciated in the previous model, GPT-4o. Following complaints about the newly implemented GPT-5 model, which was perceived as less personable, OpenAI has reinstated GPT-4o as an available option.
Altman acknowledged that the previous restrictions placed on ChatGPT were intended to address mental health concerns, but he also noted that these restrictions made the chatbot less useful for many users without mental health issues. In response to these concerns, OpenAI has introduced tools aimed at better recognizing signs of distress in users.
Furthermore, OpenAI has established a council focused on the intersection of well-being and AI, comprising a team of eight experts who study the effects of technology on mental health. However, it has been pointed out that this council does not include experts in suicide prevention, despite calls from professionals in the field for additional safeguards for users experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Altman stated that with new mental health tools implemented, OpenAI is now prepared to safely relax restrictions in most cases for adult users.
