Salisbury Foodbank in Wiltshire, affiliated with the Trussell Trust network, is encouraging donors to participate in a “reverse advent calendar” this year. This initiative involves donating 24 items to support the foodbank’s effort in preparing Christmas hampers for local families in need. The foodbank aims to assemble packages for 200 families and plans to distribute them on December 21.
Manager Maria Stevenson noted that the reverse advent calendar concept has previously proven effective in generating donations for the holiday hampers. This year, the foodbank is specifically seeking festive items such as Christmas cake, cranberry sauce, gravy, and chocolate coins, alongside essential supplies like toilet paper, toothbrushes, and deodorants.
The foodbank typically receives contributions from schools, community groups, businesses, and individual donors through the reverse advent calendar initiative. Stevenson emphasized the significance of the festive season as a time for giving and reflection, stating that it prompts individuals to think about how they can help those who are less fortunate.
While some donations have already been received, the foodbank expressed the need for additional contributions by December 15 to meet its goals for the holiday season.
